Chapter 4
(Okay, deep breaths…) Lefty breathed, “Err, hi!” Lefty waved sheepishly to a small dwarf that was holding the door open. The dwarf frowned as he stared at Lefty and her group of friends… “Excuse me, but I don’t have time to be bugged by little kids at this current moment” The dwarf snorted, before he started to close the door. A loud “Thwomp!” caused the dwarf to spin back around, as he saw that the same canine Lass had her foot in the door, keeping him from closing it.
Lefty grimaced at the sudden pain that was shooting up her foot at the moment, but valiantly kept it there. “*mmmph!* Look here dwarf! None a single one of us is here to bug ya at the moment!” Lefty grunted, still trying to keep the dwarf from shutting the door on them… She grunted in pain a bit more before she continued, “We’re just here for some information! And we will gladly leave after that! No questions asked!” Lefty pleaded, not caring at the moment if the gang got shelter from the ungrateful dwarf or not…
The dwarf seemed shocked at the young canine’s determination, before sighing and letting the door open back up all the way again. Lefty grimaced in pain before she crouched down and began to rub her foot, mumbling as she did so. “Thanks.” She muttered before standing back up and motioning for the gang to come quickly before the dwarf changed his mind and shut the door again. “We’ll only be a minute or so... Trust me, I don’t want to waste anyone else’s time more than I need to…” Lefty truly thanked the dwarf, as they walked inside.
Both Space, Shila, and the rest of the gang flopped down on whatever chairs they could find in the small study room the dwarf had guided them into.
Lefty groaned as she flopped down on a sheepskin chair. She was tired… Her muscles ached from the gang’s rock climbing adventure. Despite her long legs and really long arms, her body was never truly built for hiking, let alone sports… As Lefty sat there and waited for the dwarf to return from a room next door, she began to brush of the dirt that had collected on her purple striped shirt. Lefty froze as she had brushed down her shirt halfway, there on her shirt was the little blue cross that she had forgotten she had threw over her head.
Lefty gulped as a conclusion ran up to her head, they were really in the story of the prophet, and Lefty was the Prophet. The thought made her start to feel queasy, but hastily tried to pull herself back as a couple of weird looks were shot at Lefty. Lefty quickly coughed, to show that everything was okay, which quickly calmed down the group once more.
A sigh from the corner opposite of Lefty made the group turn around, “Well, as much as I hate to say this… Can you please tell me exactly why we needed to come to this exact house Lefty?” Stripes stared at Lefty impatiently, “I mean, I know that we just wound up in place that we don’t recognize and everything, but intruding into someone’s personal home is another thing…” Stripes glared at Lefty, as if daring her to say something else…
(Oh lord, I’m gonna have to tell them...) Lefty frowned as she opened her mouth, however a sudden “Whoosh!” Interrupted her. The dark haired dwarf had returned from the other room grunting. “Well, not that I like intrusions after sunset…” The dwarf pointed towards a window, indicating his point. “But you had better be stating your personal business now….” The dwarf’s rough tone surprised the group.
Lefty squirmed in her seat, feeling oddly uncomfortable. She didn’t know what to say… She had the courage to barge into here, but she didn’t have the courage to explain why… Lefty sighed as she opened her mouth, but the scooting of another chair immediately caused her to whirl around. Space had gotten up this time, as he walked over to Lefty’s side. Space growled, “I won’t tolerate rudeness…” Space growled, surprising Lefty. “However, because of the situation I will explain…” Space huffed, as he continued. “We came here because we were transported here, and had no other choice but to believe our instinct that you would help us!” Space pointed at the dwarf, as he growled. Lefty gulped, as she squirmed back further into her chair, embarrassed that Space seemed to have caught on better than she thought. “We have nowhere to go, and worse is that we’ve had nothing to eat!” Space continued, “We have also only relied on Lefty’s senses of belief that you, a dwarf whose name I don’t know, would help us!” Space snorted, “I trust Lefty better than anyone I’ve known in my whole life, and that’s saying something! So if my best friend here was wrong, and you cannot help us, then we are leaving!” Space roared, as he slowly started to walk towards the door the gang had entered. He looked at the gang with weary eyes, “C-come on… w-we’re leaving...” Space barely uttered the words, as he reached for the door handle…
The dwarf recoiled in surprise, as if lost for words. “Wait!” The dwarf cried. The gang turned back and looked at the dwarf in surprise; the dwarf seemed to be having trouble making sentences… “W-w-w-w…..” The dwarf stammered, as if he had never talked before. “D-did y-you s-s-say that you friend here j-just knew that she needed to come here?” The dwarf looked at Space, as if puzzled by something…
Space blinked in confusion before looking at the dwarf once more, “Ya, what of it?” Space eyed the dwarf, as if he wasn’t buying him quite yet… The dwarf quickly ran to the back room, as the sounds of objects being thrown around were heard, “Wait just a moment!” The dwarf hollered through the sound of clangs. Space just went back to his chair and sat down, as if not knowing what else to do, while Lefty clung to her chair as if it was the only thing keeping her alive. The rest of the gang just sat the motionless, except for Cat, who gave Lefty some confused looks.
“I’ve got it right here!” A voice huffed, as the clanging died down. The dwarf returned from the back room with a small scroll and sat it down on the table, making dust fly up into the air. He quickly opened the scroll to reveal that words, written in some language that the gang didn’t recognize, were written along with a picture of a canine on it that looked vaguely familiar.
The dwarf huffed before he brushed off the remaining dust that had settled on the scroll. “This here.” The dwarf pointed to the picture, “Is a picture of the one true prophet that is supposed to save Estyren…” The dwarf grumbled, as he left the gang to look at it. Princess quickly ran over to see the picture with ancient markings written below it, “Oooh, that person looks pretty!” Princess gawked at the beautifully hand drawn image. The dwarf rolled his eyes, naïve kids, the dwarf thought as he walked over towards Space and Lefty, who were strangely observing the image from afar. The dwarf then grabbed Lefty by the shoulder and hoisted her up, much to the surprise of the gang as Lefty squawked in surprise as well. “And this here is the very same Prophet who’s going to do that!” The dwarf exclaimed as he pointed to Lefty’s cross necklace. Lefty began to feel hot under the pressure, knowing what was coming up next. “She has the cross stone that will help accomplish this, and you lot are going to help her!” The dwarf snorted, as if he was not too happy with the choice of people who were there.
There was nothing but pure silence for the next five minutes, as the gang just looked at Lefty. One could tell that there was nothing but shock showing on Cat, Princess, and Shila, but Space and Stripes just kind of looked like that had expected something like this. Even though the dwarf had let Lefty go, Lefty just felt like the dwarf should have thrown her through the window. She bit her lip, as if she was waiting for someone to come and attack her. There was nothing more that she wanted to do was just shrink, shrink to the size of a mouse so she could just crawl away… However, all she did was just stand there and wait for someone to speak up…
Ironically it was Cat, Lefty’s most trusted friend, who stood up… Lefty closed her eyes, thinking that Cat was going to start crying and ask her why she lied to them, but Cat simply walked over and patted Lefty. Lefty opened her eyes in surprise to see Cat smiling up at her, “Well, why couldn’t ya have told us? After all, we are your friend’s right? And we’re all going to help you out right?” Cat glared at the group as they nodded in agreement.
Lefty managed to crack a smile, “I just… Didn’t want to freak you guys out or anything… Cause I wasn’t even to sure myself…” Lefty squirmed, as if ants just crawled up her pelt…
The dwarf grunted, as if breaking their silence. “Well, as much as I hate to break up this confrontation…” The dwarf smiled, “If ya’ll are gonna help restore the light and everything to Estyren, and what not. Ya need to be properly equipped for the journey…” The dwarf grunted.
The gang exchanged confused looks before looking at the dwarf in confusion. The dwarf rolled his eyes, typical, he thought before raising his arms in defeat, “Don’t tell me ya didn’t know that you were going to need to be prepared!” The dwarf groaned, “Ya’ll got to help guide the Prophet to the hill of stone, so she can place the cross stone in the pillar of stone to help restore the light to Estryren!” The dwarf groaned, feeling that he was talking to kindergarteners now…
The gang blinked in surprise before Princess walked up to the dwarf, “So, are we really gonna go on a real adventure?” Princess asked, as if she was still confused. The dwarf sighed before lowering down to the youngest Lass of the group, “Yes, my lady… But it will be a hard one… Do you think you can handle it?” The dwarf questioned, hoping that the Lass would understand the seriousness in this adventure. Princess stiffened up before looking at the Dwarf once more, “Yes! Yes I am ready!” Princess hollered back into the dwarf’s face, making the dwarf recoiled in surprise.
The dwarf smiled before straightening up looking at the small group of animals, “Well, if this little Lass is prepared then let’s get to it!” The dwarf smiled as the gang cheered… The dwarf’s face then turned to seriousness, “Right, so first off we need to assign roles.” The dwarf continued as he pointed to Shila, “You will be the archer… You are the most slender designed for the job. You will help keep enemies at bay…” The dwarf smiled at Shila…
Shila blinked in surprise, “W-who me? Well, shucks thanks!” Shila blushed. The dwarf snorted, “No need for thankin’, just keep the Prophet safe from harm before they reach her...” At this Shila stopped blushing and turned serious…
The dwarf then pointed to Princess while smiling, “And you little Lass will be a ranger. Rangers are good at hearing and keeping watch over groups. I know it can be hard holding the heavy weapons they use, but I have no doubt that you can do it… Because you have already proven it…” The dwarf smiled. Princess’ eyes sparkled as she beamed a bright, serious smile at the dwarf…
The dwarf then turned around to Stripes, who was smiling at the corner of the room, just waiting to hear what he was going to be… “Ah yes, the inquisitive one…” The dwarf beamed, “You will be a wizard, similar to what the Prophet over here can do, but more refined…” The dwarf pointed to Lefty before continuing, “You will be in charge of making sure that the front line doesn’t fall by giving then support with your magic…” The dwarf smiled...
The dwarf’s smile faded as he looked over to Space, “And for the brave one here, he will be a Knight… His strength and stamina will make him the main fighter, however because he is young it could be hard for him to adjust to the heavy armor…” The dwarf rubbed his chin as though he was second guessing himself… Space growled, “Hey, pardon me but I’ve had a ton of training back home ok?” Space snorted… The dwarf shrugged, “Fair enough, just don’t over-do it...” He grumbled…
Cat walked up to the dwarf, as if she was wondering why he had chosen her for last… The dwarf noticed this and smiled at the young Lass’ curiosity… “Wondering huh?” The dwarf questioned, making Cat nod in surprise…. “You will be given what I consider one of the most important roles, next to the Prophet that is… You will be known as the healer of the group… Take note that this task does not come easy, but once one knows the right herbs and things, it can be rewarding… It takes a lady’s care to soothe the injured while healing, however do not let fear take hold of you while healing…” The dwarf reply in a much more serious tone…
The dwarf then looked at Lefty, “As you know, you are the Prophet… You will be the last spark of hope and courage in many eyes… Your cross stone there will help guide you for the most part, however you still need some training to help harness it properly…” The dwarf then cleared his throat before continuing, “I see that you hardy and courageous spirit has lead you this far, and that is good to help you harness the power of light better… But you must know that it will take a lot of you energy to use that power, so don’t be a fool with it! There will also be many trials that you will face along the road, so don’t let fear govern you spirit or you will fall! You must also keep your identity hidden as best possible, so you will constantly have to wear clothing to mask your face in case the shadows spot you… They can manifest in people too, so trust no one!” The dwarf frowned, as he noticed that Lefty looked uncomfortable hearing this…
The dwarf sighed as he walked over to her, trying to comfort her as he spoke, “Do not fear, you will not be alone... I will give both you and the Healer a special hood, identical so that way the shadows will not know who is the real Prophet… The hoods give off light energy, so they will mask you from being sensed… However, for the life of everyone don’t take off the hood! The energy will surge out, causing the shadows to know exactly where you are…”
Lefty felt like someone had just hit her in the chest, she breathed heavily as she felt like the whole world was going to crush her… Shila immediately ran over to Lefty and jumped up and down excitedly, “Hey isn’t this great? First I get to meet you guys in real life, and know I get to go on an adventure with you!” Shila giggled as she bobbed up and down like and excited wolf pup would… Lefty quickly cleared her throat and smiled, “Err, ya it’s great… Just us... No one else here…. Not my parents, nor, my family, not even my boyfriend….” Lefty frowned…
A loud, “Slap!” Was heard as the gang jumped. “Well, I’m sure that you lot are excited and all, but what’s more important is that the Prophet gets some sleep so she can help us in our time of need…” The dwarf smiled as he looked at the poor overwhelmed canine Lass. “We’ll start training tomorrow for you, young prophet…” He smiled, “The rest of you ain’t so lucky, we can’t get weapons until tomorrow; however that doesn’t mean we can’t read up on some good old fashioned skills, right?” The dwarf smiled as he shoved the gang into another room…
Lefty gasped as she stared at a large room with enough beds to sleep on for twice as many people as Lefty’s group… The dwarf huffed, as he put his hands on his hips, “well don’t just stand the gawking all day! Go ahead and choose a bed before the sun comes back up!” The dwarf grumbled…
The gang seemed to race to try and grab a bed that suited them the most, except for Lefty who waited until everyone had a bed when she chose a medium sized bed that had soft sheets… The gang then set down whatever items they had, if any, before one by one, they each walked back to the dwarf, save Lefty. As Lefty started to make herself comfortable, she looked at the dwarf one last time… “Um, thanks for helping us, err….” Lefty paused, realizing that none of them had even asked for the dwarf’s name yet…
“Toby…” The same voice echoed inside her head, Lefty realized. It was the cross necklace that had been speaking to her… “Name’s Toby…” The dark haired dwarf smiled, as he shut the door… Lefty immediately dove herself deeper into the covers, “Right, night Toby...” Lefty muttered, as drowsiness set in…
