Chapter
11
“CRACKLE!
SNAP! POP!” The fire chimed, as Lefty folded her arms behind her head and
sighed happily… “Ah… It’s so soothing being warm and dry for a change…” Lefty
smiled as she nuzzled up to a tree trunk tighter… “This is really the first
nice, peaceful place I’ve been since we came here…” Lefty grinned, as she took
another deep breath… “What do you guys think? Wanna just hang here for the next
few days?” Lefty smiled, as she looked at her dry friends around her…
Shila
folded her arms around her lap, “It’s nice, but I don’t understand how you can
feel so safe around here with the recent attack we had yesterday.” Shila
frowned, as she looked at Lefty still concerned and puzzled.
Lefty
shrugged, “Hey, we have Space on guard for right now, it’s not like someone’s
gonna ambush us or anything!” Lefty barked, as she cracked a smile. “It’s the
first time I can actually let my mind roam peacefully.” Lefty smiled, as she
breathed in some more fresh air before nuzzling even closer into the tree’s
trunk, her eyes faintly glowing blue again as she looked around.
Stripes
grunted, “Perhaps that’s not such a great thing to be doing right now…” Stripes
frowned as he spoke for the first time in a while… Lefty looked at Stripes
confused as the glow around her eyes stopped, “Pardon? I thought it was always a good thing to do in a time of
peril…” Lefty frowned at Stripes puzzled. Stripes crossed his arms, “Normally I
would agree, but not after what I saw today.” Stripes frowned his eyebrows at
Lefty. Lefty looked at Stripes, hurt... “What do you mean by that? As far as I
know, everything went fine!” Lefty snorted, not pleased by Stripes comment
towards her.
Stripes
clutched his fists, “Don’t pretend that you don’t know!” Stripes growled, as he
stood up quickly. “You know as well as I do that you can’t handle the power you
are releasing!” Stripes roared as he pointed at Lefty. “Stripes, relax man… I’m
totally capable of handling it, I just excited and well… you know…” Lefty
breathed hard, embarrassment running though her as she tried to calm Stripes
back down and herself.
“I’m
tired of playing this game; you know that you won’t win. You can’t handle it,
and you need to be sucking up your pride and admitting it!” Stripes screamed,
tears running down his eyes now, “I trust you, you know! And I know that you’re
just as afraid as the rest of us! Why can’t you just admit it?!” Stripes cried
as he looked away from Lefty, making sure that she didn’t see the emotional
pain he was feeling right now.
The
group now looked at both Lefty and Stripes with mixed emotions showing on their
faces, but remained silent as Lefty had got up from where she was sitting and
took a deep breath. Shila had noticed that Lefty had cast a quick glance around
the group for backup, but when her eyes had met her own Shila wasn’t going to
let Lefty win and remained with the same look that said “Well? What do you have to say?”
“Stripes…”
Lefty mumbled with her head down, guilt now flowing over her face… Stripes took
a quick look at Lefty before turning his face away again, “No Lefty, it’s not
that simple… I really thought you understood… You are the only friend I have ever trusted that I could honestly talk
to and be myself… But, I expected that since we were so much alike you knew that secrets were not okay… I… I… I’m having a hard time
trusting you right now…” Stripes bit his lip, as more tears flowed down his
face….
It
was then that Lefty stomped her foot on the ground and made a squeak that Shila
thought sounded more like her voice was cracking while she spoke to Stripes. “Well
Stripes, I do understand ok? I know what it’s like to feel that way better than
anyone here! You think that I’m not aware of my powers going crazy?! I’ve been trying to keep the mood light, because
the real truth is…!” Lefty bit her
lip, her eyes flickered before she opened her mouth again, “I’m… I’m just as
scared as the rest of you all, if not worse!” Lefty squeaked and spoke the
words out so fast that it was hard to understand them… “I didn’t want this to
happen!” Lefty whined. “I didn’t want to see my friends be put in peril! And
worst off, I didn’t want to make anyone upset!” Lefty’s lip trembled, as fresh
tears crawled down her face. “You think you truly know me Stripes, and maybe
you do! But I know you just as well! And that doesn’t change the fact that I
care! So don’t treat me like I don’t!” Lefty cried in frustration.
Stripes
blinked in surprise, before he growled, “And just how much do you think you know me, huh? I’ve never seen you show it!” Stripes cried, his face now looking at
Lefty directly at her eyes.
Lefty
noticed what he was doing, and looked into his eyes dead on, as more tears fell
down her face. “SHUT UP! How many times have I not seen you lie directly in my
face! You tell me! I do care about you as a friend, you know? You know the time
when we took the English Eoc? I noticed how nervous you looked before you took
it! I felt how unconfident you felt about yourself! In fact I probably am the ONLY person who can read you like a
book!” Lefty screamed at Stripes, “When you came out of the same room I had, I
noticed how much you were trembling as you walked outside! I even asked you if
you were nervous, because I was concerned. But noooooo… I could tell that you lied, when you said that you were
cold! Tell me Stripes, how could you be cold when it was 65 outside?! TELL ME!”
Lefty yelled, just waiting for Stripes to dare open his mouth and reply
different…
Stripes
seemed stunned, as he stood there in silence for what seemed like forever, “I… I…
I’m sorry…” Stripes barely uttered the words out, seeming to shock Stripes that
Lefty knew him better than he thought…
Lefty
looked at Stripes, before more tears fell down her eyes. “Sorry doesn’t change
things… My… My trust has just been lost
with you guys… I can’t travel any further with you guys like this…” Lefty
cried, as she bolted into the trees and continued to run away from them, her
hood down…
“Wait!
Lefty!” Cat screamed as she immediately got up and started to run after Lefty
through the bushes… “Lefty wait!” Stripes screamed through his tears as he
started to run after her too in guilt, but Shila had gotten hold of his arm and
held him so he couldn’t run after her.
“Boy,
I think you caused enough trouble…” Shila frowned as she pushed him next to a
tree and made him sit down… “Shila! Let go! I’ve got to go after her! I have
to… Make amends!” Stripes cried… Shila shook her head at Stripes, “Hush! Now is
not the time to mess with Lefty…” Shila frowned, as she quickly looked over at
Princess, who was asleep and had missed the event, to see if she was okay.
Stripes
growled, “You don’t know who she is! You haven’t met her before until this
journey! She’s not like that!” Stripes growled, as he tried to loosen Shila’s
grip on his shoulders. Shila flatted her ears and growled in response, “I may
not know her, but I do know women… And let me tell you Stripes that now is NOT the time to mess with her… She needs
to sort out things for herself, and right now she is trying to make sense of
the seriousness of this mission… You need to let Cat handle this…” Shila cooed
the crying wizard…
Stripes
felt hot underneath his pelt, “I don’t take orders from people I don’t know
that well… But, I’ll give her fifteen minutes and then I’m going to look for
her. And I’d like to see you try and
stop me!” Stripes frowned…
Shila
grunted, but nodded her head in agreement, “Fine. But I think you had better
come up with a good apology to Lefty if she comes back…” Shila snorted, as she
walked over to Princess, making sure she was still asleep…
(Fine, whatever… But, one thing is for
certain… If Lefty doesn’t return, then how am I gonna explain this mess to
myself? *sigh* Perhaps, I shouldn’t have pushed Lefty too hard...) Stripes
thought to himself, as he started wiping the tears from his eyes… Stripes then
laid against the back of the tree and began to think of things as guilt and drowsiness
overtook him….
